In May, a joint committee of the Central Pollution Control Board, Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board and district administration, constituted on the directions of the NGT, imposed an interim compensation of Rs 76 crore on 38 defaulting builders for illegally extracting groundwater through borewells. ,
However, the tribunal constituted another committee comprising the CGWB, the district administration and the UPPCB to determine the final compensation amount. The CGWB submitted its report to the panel on Monday, recommending a total penalty of Rs 230 crore on 30 of these developers.
According to officials, the district-level joint committee was formed in July last year in response to a petition by two environmentalists alleging that 63 housing projects in Greater Noida and Greater Noida West were illegally extracting groundwater. Had been
The committee examined all the projects in two phases and found borewells in 41 projects. Of these 41 projects, three were allowed to use groundwater, but the remaining 38 were not. Subsequently, the UPPCB sent notices to 38 builders asking them to deposit 0.5% of the project cost as environment compensation, but received no response. The board then issued notices asking the builders to pay a fine of Rs 76.5 crore within 15 days.
On Tuesday, UPPCB regional officer Radhey Shyam said that the final compensation amount has been recommended by the CGWA to the NGT panel. “On Wednesday there will be a meeting of a committee headed by the Additional District Magistrate on the recommendation of the CGWA.”
The final compensation was calculated by CGWA as per the data provided by UPPCB and Greater Noida Authority relating to 41 defaulter projects.
According to the District Ground Water Department, GB Nagar falls under the groundwater depletion category from ‘notified’ to ‘over-exploited’ area.
Of its three blocks, two including Bisrakh and Jewar are in the overexploited category while Dadri is semi-critical. Water level in Greater Noida to fall from 13.60 meters in 2021 to 13.79 meters in 2022.
While the water level in Jewar has dropped from 8.52 meters in 2021 to 8.81 meters in 2022.
