Bhubaneswar: The construction work of the houses is almost completed Bhubaneswar Development Authority ,BDA) is preparing to allot units in its affordable housing projects for the economically weaker sections.
Residential projects in which allotment will be done Ghatikia, Chandrashekharpur, thunder and Subudhipur.
The four projects were constructed under the state government’s ‘Housing for All’ scheme in public private partnership (PPP) mode.
A high-level meeting was held recently in this regard where officials discussed finalizing the modalities for smooth allotment of houses to the beneficiaries of the tagged slums.
As per the decisions taken in the meeting, priority will be given to those who have made their initial financial contribution for allotment of houses, while others will be given a specific time to make the payment for getting their housing units.
“All eligible beneficiaries of the tagged slums will be given an opportunity for priority allotment of houses in the projects. We are working in close coordination with the civic body to get the list of eligible beneficiaries for allotment of houses, said Balwant Singh, BDA vice-chairman.
He said the objective is to rehabilitate each family from the tagged slums and make the entire slum land available for public infrastructure and other development. Partial rehabilitation of slums will not serve the purpose of housing projects, Singh said.
Sources said an initial amount of Rs 1.20 lakh would be collected from the EWS (Economically Weaker Section) category for allotment of houses and Rs 1 lakh would be taken in instalments. For non-EWS beneficiaries of slums, the decision is yet to be taken by the Urban Development Department.
The meeting also suggested construction of at least 5,000 transit house facilities at various locations in the city for smooth implementation of various upcoming public infrastructure and development projects where slum dwellers are likely to be affected.
Officials said that the BDA will place a proposal in this regard before the government for funds to build the transit house. He said that the slum dwellers removed for any kind of development project would be shifted to new transit houses.
However, slum leaders are still reluctant to visit the houses.
“We are not going to those houses. We want land at the place from where we are being evicted. We don’t want matchbox-sized flats, says All President Odisha Basti Suraksha Manch President Pratap Sahu said.
