Ludhiana: The installation of smart Unique Identity (UID) numberplates is expected to begin in the next 10 days, as the mapping of the city’s biggest block is still underway. Meanwhile, the design of the numberplates has been finalised, and once the mapping is complete, the authorities will start installing numberplates in Block 29.
The city has a total of 37 blocks in which more than 4 lakh properties are registered in the Municipal Corporation (MC) records. Of this, the MC asked the contractor to start the mapping process with Block 29 – the largest block with around 75,000 properties. Since the area is densely populated, the process is taking time and so far over 50,000 properties have been scanned.
mc superintendent Vivek Verma “The contractor has started his work in the area, and we are hopeful that we can go ahead with the installation in the next few days,” he added. He said the contractor has one year to cover all the city properties and they will try to meet the deadline.
A mobile application is also being made for official use, where the entire process of mapping and installation of plates can be checked by the civic authorities. The authorities also expect that many new properties may also get registered with the MC during the course of the mapping, as the city has grown substantially in the last few years.
The much-awaited UID numberplate project is important for both the residents of the city and the civic body. While on one hand, residents can use their UID number to check tax related information and avail other MC services online, on the other hand officials can easily check the status of pending taxes on the portal.
However, the project has been delayed several times in the last two years due to technical reasons and departmental queries, and the residents are now eagerly waiting for it.
