Shivakumar said the civic body had prepared a detailed proposal to increase property tax in the city ahead of the assembly elections. The officers handed over the proposal to him.

“I have received the proposal and I will examine it before taking a decision,” Shivakumar said.

He asked BBMP The officers should not depend on the government for funds for development works. “The central government has already stopped funding for the city of Bengaluru. Therefore, BBMP should avoid tax leakage and maintain its resources by collecting tax.

Municipal officials said the property tax collection target for 2023-24 is Rs 4,790 crore including cess. In 2022-23, the civic body has collected over Rs 3,800 crore, as against the target of Rs 4,189 crore. Mop-ups will increase if the state government gives a go-ahead to BBMP’s property tax hike proposal, he added.

Shivakumar held a BBMP review meeting for over three hours. He asked the engineers of the Road Infrastructure Department to submit before and after photos and videos as proof of the work done by them. He also directed Engineer-in-Chief BS Prahlad to submit complete details of works done in the city in the last five years.

BBMP Administrator Rakesh Singh, Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath, Special Commissioners, Engineers and senior officers were present in the review meeting.

Shivakumar also held a review meeting with BDA officials and directed them to ensure that there is no corruption in the agency. He said that new layouts should be developed and directed the officers to complete all the ongoing works at the earliest.
