Noida: The Uttar Pradesh pollution control boardUPPCB) has imposed a fine of Rs 76.5 crore on 38 builders for illegally extracting groundwater from borewells. The builders will have to deposit the amount within 15 days.

In July 2022, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) constituted a district-level joint committee comprising district magistrates and officials from state and central pollution control boards, in response to a petition by two environmentalists alleging 63 housing projects in Greater was imposed. Noida and Greater Noida West were illegally extracting groundwater.
The committee examined all the projects in two phases and borewells were found in 41 projects. Of these 41 projects, three were permitted to use groundwater, but the remaining 38 were not.
Thereafter, the UPPCB Notices were sent to 38 builders to deposit 0.5% of the project cost as environment compensation but no response received. So this month, the board issued notices to 38 builders asking them to pay a fine of Rs 76.5 crore within 15 days.
UPPCB regional officer Radhey Shyam said, “We have already issued notices to the builders regarding the fine imposed on them. They will have to pay the fine amount within 15 days of the notice.”
During the hearing in the case on May 15, the UPPCB also filed an action taken report with the NGT notifying about the penalty imposed on the builders. The next hearing in the case is in July.
In addition, the UPPCB has initiated action under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 against 29 projects by issuing show cause notices to the concerned builders.
