Lucknow: The state government is in the process of reviving the affordable rental housing scheme For people belonging to economically backward classes.
The Urban Development Department has identified sites in 27 cities of Uttar Pradesh where housing units will be provided to skilled and unskilled workers who are forced to live in jhuggis or roadside slums.
Individuals with a monthly income of less than Rs 25,000 will be eligible to get rental accommodation, while the local administration and urban body will have the option to redefine the income criteria as per local dynamics.
Local bodies have been asked to conduct a survey to find out whether affordable housing is needed to improve the quality of life of the urban poor.
The properties will be offered to the interested player on a concession period of 25 years. “The average monthly rent for a single room unit at the national level is Rs 3,000,” said an official. A part of the PM Awas Yojana, the state government launched the survey to set up affordable rental housing complexes within 100 cities in UP.
Director, Urban Local Bodies, Neha Sharma said that the State Urban Development Authority will assist the local bodies in identifying sites and existing housing projects that can be made suitable for housing the urban poor.
