Mumbai: ED has registered a money laundering case against 65 builders of Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation.KDMC) charged with receiving territory Rare (real estate regulator authority) certificates by submitting forged documents and cheating the homebuyers.

The ED has been recording the statements of the builders for a few days. Developers, mostly local, constructed buildings illegally, produced fake documents of permission, used them to obtain RERA certificates and sold the flats. It is alleged that he did not take permission for the construction of the building from KDMC and other concerned departments at all.

The KDMC had registered two police cases related to the fraud and a Special Investigation Team was constituted to probe the scam.

ED probing money collected by builders from buyers for illegal flats

Enforcement Directorate (ED) KDMC is probing the trail of money collected from homebuyers by 65 builders in the area, who have been booked by the police for obtaining RERA certificates by submitting forged documents and cheating homebuyers.

The source of the money invested during the construction of the illegal buildings is also under the scanner of the ED. ED is taking recorded statements of KDMC and Maharera To understand the process regarding how building permission is granted to the authorities and RERA registration.

Based on KDMC’s complaints to the police in Dombivli, a Special Investigation Team was formed. The SIT had alerted all concerned agencies, including the ED, about the fraud and arrested 10 persons, builders, while continuing the probe into the fraud.

In view of such frauds, MahaRERA has requested the state urban development department to make approval of all milestones of the building construction process online for all municipalities for greater transparency.

MahaRERA Chairman Ajay Mehta Told the government that all municipalities with offline processes should send permission granted to a building through their registered official email ID for registration of projects with MahaRERA until they make the entire process online.

Currently, only a few municipalities have an online process for building permission, including Mumbai and Pune. MahaRERA registration of residential building projects is essential for selling flats.

Officials said their office would rely on attested copies of documents sent by builders to issue registration certificates and there is no mechanism to check whether these documents are genuine or not.
