Noida: The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority ,GNIDAsealed an under-construction building in shaberry And on Saturday, notices were given to 82 other occupants.

The 2020 IIT-Delhi survey found them unsafe and developed without following bye-laws, officials said. But people have continued to live in them.

Kapil Singh, a senior manager at GNIDA, said, “A safety audit of the buildings by IIT-Delhi in March 2020 found them unsafe. At that time, we launched an operation and sealed the buildings. But recently we got information that some people have started living in these buildings. We have identified 82 buildings and given notices to the occupants to vacate the premises. If they don’t come out, we will take action.”

Officials said that in 2020, IIT-Delhi studied 437 buildings in Shahberi and found that only three did not require further action, while its report recommended strengthening of the remaining 434 buildings.

During the sealing drive on Saturday, GNIDA officials also made announcements with loudspeakers, stating that people should not stay in unsafe buildings where unwanted incidents could happen due to rains this monsoon.

On July 17, 2018, two buildings collapsed in Shahberi, killing nine people, including a minor, which prompted GNIDA to approach IIT Delhi for a survey that would identify illegal properties in the area.

The New Okhla Industrial Development Authority (Fourth Amendment) Manual, 2016, which guides the development of freehold properties in Noida, states that the Noida Authority will have to approve the building layout of any project in rural areas, after which the competent authority will do so. Will check out the projects. The maximum permissible floor area ratio (FAR) is 1.8 with a height of 15 meters (up to 3 storeys), while the two buildings that collapsed in 2018 were of six storeys.

Brij Bhushan Tyagi, a resident of Shahberi, said the area is densely populated but lacks basic infrastructure. “GNIDA has not developed sewage lines in Shahberi. Water is not able to pass, due to which there are problems. The roads are also dilapidated. The authorities should fix these issues as many people live in Shahberi,” he said.
