While 14 out of 17 Nagar Nigams (Municipal Corporations) in UP have implemented a GIS-based property tax calculation module, 199 Nagar Palikas (Nagar Parishads) and 544 Nagar Panchayats (Municipal Councils) still calculate tax and annual rental value manually. are doing formally.

On the other hand, corporations have been using GIS-based technology since 2018. In order to improve its revenue collection, GIS-based counting method will be implemented in 17 corporations within the current financial year.

He said, “We are going to push for tax reforms in municipalities with a population of more than 1 lakh by the end of this year. Later, other ULBs will also be included,” said Nishith Rai, director, Regional Center for Urban Environmental Studies, Lucknow.

The department expects its revenue to increase by 2.5 times with the use of GIS technology.

Sharing an example, Principal Secretary of the department Amrit Abhijat said that in Lucknow there has been an increase of 35 per cent within a year with the new system. While the Lucknow Municipal Corporation received Rs 282 crore as property tax in 2021-22, the collection increased to Rs 381 crore during 2022-23. Meanwhile, the department is also considering increasing the property tax slab for commercial properties that are not registered with the tourism department.

“The hotels, guest houses, resorts that are not registered with the tourism department will have to pay six times the annual rental value of the locality. The registered ones will be asked to pay three times the rental value,” informed an official. .
