Chennai: Residents fed up with myriad problems from water supply to poor infrastructure Tamil Nadu Housing Board ,tnhb) In Avadi Recently performed in his area.
During the 90s over 6,500 people bought layouts and constructed houses in Avadi as TNHB promised 21 facilities including bus stand, library, hospital, marriage hall, police station.
“In 2008, a drinking water scheme was started in Avadi, but till date there is no water supply network in wards 40 and 41. There are two overhead tanks of 10 lakh liters capacity each, but they are not being used. We are procuring drinking water through tractors and lorries,” said A Dharanidharan, member of the Avadi TNHB residents welfare association.
Another issue was storm water drainage. “The previous government had sanctioned Rs 7.5 crore for this but it has not been kept properly. In some parts it has not been completed. Due to this water logging is common here. We have been requesting Avadi Municipality to resolve the issue, but there is no relief,” he said.
He said that the government should also cover the 5 feet wide canal in the Nazareth School Annexe lake to prevent children from falling into it. “A few years ago two children died after falling in it. Even a few years back I had a fall and I lodged a complaint with the Avadi Municipality. When there was no response, I filed a petition with the Human Rights Commission,” he said. Dharanidharan claims that although the commission had ordered Avadi Corporation in 2022 to rectify the problem and compensate them, “till date this has not happened”.
The residents also claimed that the TNHB was trying to sell off the layout meant for facilities like libraries and hospitals etc.
Avadi Corporation Commissioner K Tharpagraj said that they have started the process of providing water supply to the residents of Ward 40 and 41.
“Even for TNHB I had started the supply but during the SWD laying work on Parithipattu-Poonamallee road, the pipeline was removed. Now the work of relaying it has started. The supplies will be given soon,” he said.
