Mangaluru: DCP (Crime & Traffic) B.P. Dinesh Kumar has urged landlords to do background checks on tenants while renting out houses and apartments in the city. He was speaking at a public grievance redressal meeting held urwa police station. Mangaluru City Police organizes three grievance redressal meetings at police stations Ullal, Suratkal and Urwa on Saturday.
Dinesh Kumar said that the landlords should keep an eye on the activities of the tenants. “Public cooperation is essential for implementing pro-people initiatives. People should not forget their social and moral responsibilities,” he said.
The Mangaluru City Police has decided to make the city drug-free by August 15, he said. “A special campaign has been planned in the city to create awareness among students. The cooperation of the public, especially auto drivers, is vital in tracing drug transport routes. The police will not make public the details of the informers,” he said.
The DCP said that every police station is maintaining records of senior citizens and once in every month a meeting of elderly persons is organized. “Police personnel visit the homes of senior citizens alone. They do not need to visit police stations for passport verification process. Our personnel will go to his house and complete the process.
Inspector Bharti ji said that the house owners should keep a record of the details of the tenants and inform the police if they find suspicious persons in their rented premises.
At the meeting held in Ullal, city police commissioner Kuldeep Kumar R Jain said that all the issues raised by the residents during the meetings would be brought to the notice of the departments concerned. “City police teams are working in coordination to stop the smuggling of ganja and other drugs,” he added.
In a special drive against the use of cigarette and gutka around schools and colleges across the city, 348 shops and establishments were searched on Saturday, the official said. Police teams found 153 shops selling cigarettes or gutkha or both. He said cases were registered under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) and the shopkeepers were asked to pay a fine of Rs 200 each, besides warning them not to do so again.
DCP (Law and Order) Anshu Kumar presided over the meeting at Surathkal police station. The participants in the grievance meetings demanded action against over speeding city buses/other vehicles, use of high beam headlights, parking on footpaths, unscientific bus shelters, traffic congestion and parking of buses on roads during night time.
