NagpurAround 900 families are living under the city’s first housing scheme. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana ,PMAY) are facing severe water crisis since last one month.
Wells and drinking water taps have dried up, making the first summer of the housing scheme a nightmare.
The residents are alleging improper planning and poor quality of works by the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) to their distress.
Pradeep Chowdhary, one of the PMAY beneficiaries, told TOI that flat owners are forced to fetch water on vehicles for drinking and other purposes throughout the day, while some have hired autorickshaws for the task. “Contrary to the expectations of leading a comfortable life, we are facing a pathetic condition even after taking loans to buy flats,” he said.
According to the residents, all the three wells dug by the NMRDA have dried up a month back. TOI had reported on September 13, 2022, that the NMRDA had included a 10-feet parapet while claiming a depth of 40 feet.
The residents also claimed that the NMRDA is yet to commission three borewells in the housing society.
The beneficiaries also said that the water provided by the private operator of Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Orange City Water Private Limited, is not reaching the underground tanks. “The internal drinking water pipeline laid by NMRDA is at a lower level at the entrances and then rises higher till it reaches the summit. It should have been the opposite,” he said.
Chowdhary and other residents alleged that despite submitting letters and making phone calls, no NMRDA official has met them to resolve the issues. “Despite paying all the one-time maintenance charges, the NMRDA is yet to set up the flat owners’ society and hand over the money. In the absence of the society, it is the responsibility of the NMRDA to ensure the maintenance of the housing scheme,” he said.
NMRDA officials did not respond to TOI’s calls and messages in this regard.
The authority had constructed 942 flats at Khasra number one. 62, Mouza Tarodi for PMAY’s first housing scheme in the city.
Earlier, TOI had reported about poor quality of work during monsoon last year due to rain water entering the flats.
Roads and footpaths, the work of installing interlocking tiles, bridges over drains are also incomplete. The sewage treatment plant, community hall, garden and solar power system are yet to be commissioned by the NMRDA despite giving possession of the flats a year back.
