In July 2022, a district-level joint committee was formed in the wake of petitions by two environmentalists alleging that 63 housing projects of around 40 builders were illegally extracting groundwater. During an investigation, the committee found that 41 projects were extracting groundwater through borewells.
With the closure of borewells and the onset of summer, most societies are facing water scarcity.
Officials said three other societies had also applied for NOCs, but due to lack of documents, they could not proceed with the process.
“A report has been sought from the authority on the applications. Also, the applications have been sent to the state ground water authority, which will decide on the NOC,” said an official.
