Mumbai: in the last fortnight, BMC has issued show cause notices to 22 developers for delay in redevelopment of rental propertiesAll of which are located in the island city.
In fact, the contract of one of the 22 developers has also been terminated for not starting work.
BMC There are 139 rental properties, out of which 94 are currently undergoing redevelopment works. The civic body has served notices to 22 of these for not following the conditions of the LOI (letter of intent). Civil Estates Department officials said that a recent review of all the ongoing projects found that in case of these 22 projects, the works were delayed without any justification being submitted by the developers.
“This is the first time that show-cause notices have been sent on such a large scale,” a senior civic official said, adding that the notices questioned why his contract should not be terminated.
Of the 22 notices, maximum (7) have been given to ongoing projects in E ward, which includes Byculla and Byculla areas. Mumbai Central. Samajwadi MLA Raees Sheikh, former corporator of E ward, said that BMC is one of the biggest landlords of the city.
“To delay redevelopment of rental properties should not be tolerated. There is also a need to rethink the entire redevelopment policy,” said Shaikh.
Ravi Raja, former opposition leader of the Congress in the BMC, said that the BMC should strictly check the financial status of developers before giving them redevelopment rights. Housing expert Chandrasekhar Prabhu said such delays are engineered “there is a nexus, and strict action should be taken,” he said.
