Nagpur: 60% of around 6.36 lakh property owners in the city have not paid property tax In the financial year 2022-23. according to data from property tax Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), the dues of over 3.80 lakh defaulters has reached ₹ 581 crore.

The data shows that the maximum number of defaulters are from Ashi Nagar area where 88,633 property owners owe Rs 114.44 crore to the NMC, followed by Laxmi Nagar area where 35,707 owners defaulted on paying tax of Rs 81.74 crore Is.

The Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Revenue) said that these defaulters have not been paying taxes for the last several years. Milind Meshram,

He said the civic body had pegged the property tax revenue at Rs 250 crore in the last financial year, but it could generate Rs 241 crore.

Sources in the accounts and finance department of NMC said that the civic administration needs to strengthen property tax collection as it is the main source of revenue for the civic body.

Meshram said that the NMC has already taken several initiatives to reduce the arrears. The total property tax arrears as on April 1, 2022 stood at ₹786 crore. The NMC then decided several objections, especially from educational institutions and temples, where incorrect tax calculations were made.

Sources said the NMC should adopt a two-pronged strategy to bring down such ballooning dues – focus on redressing citizen grievances regarding tax and allocating funds based on tax compliance in each department.
