PUNE: Housing societies and other commercial properties do not comply fire safety standards Will face action as the civic body has launched a drive to check the fire safety preparedness of all properties in its limits.
Owners and occupiers of these properties failing to maintain the fire fighting system will face a fine of Rs 50,000 or a jail term of six months.
“The owners or occupiers will have to give a certificate that the system in their premises is foolproof. They should get this certificate from licensed auditors,” said Devendra PotfodeHead of the Fire Department of Pune Municipal Corporation.
Details of licensed auditors are also available at the Fire Department and PMCofficial website of. Officials said citizens who avail their services can send the certificate online to the department, and there is no need to submit the physical copy.
“Many property owners avoid setting up annual maintenance contracts for fire protection due to financial issues or other reasons such as indifference towards fire protection. Even the office bearers of the housing societies are not aware of the need and procedure to maintain the fire fighting system. All these people are held responsible for any mishap,” said a senior official PMC,
The provisions of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006 have fixed the responsibility of fire safety preparedness on the owner and occupiers. The certificate can be submitted in January and July after proper assessment of the property. Residents should be given basic training in the use of fire extinguishers and handling of different types of fires through mock-drills.
