“The work on the fire fighting system has been completed and the work of improving the toilets is underway. The floor stones in all the buildings in the district center have been replaced with granite and plazas are being developed between these buildings. These will have tensile structures of different heights along with smart LED lighting poles with new seating, kiosks, Wi-Fi and CCTV cameras, said a DDA official.
The project also includes the installation of eight escalators and a passenger lift at the district centre.
“We are in the process of installing escalators. Footpaths are being upgraded for easy pedestrian movement and parking lots have been upgraded by laying new paver tiles. The construction of two toilets is almost complete. He said that the upgrade is proposed to be made disabled friendly.
The DDA has also proposed to construct an amphitheater with LED screens and shops of different sizes in the central area of the district centre.
“To reduce the problem of water logging and conserve rain runoff, a robust drainage system and construction of 12 rain water harvesting structures have been completed,” the official said.
But Nehru Place Officials said work is underway for a skywalk connecting the commercial centre, metro to the main market, and for roads and footpaths.
Planned four years ago, the skywalk aims to connect the concourse area of the metro station with the Central Plaza near Satyam Cinema. Once completed, commuters will not need to step down from the elevated station and cross the busy Aastha Kunj Road to reach Nehru Place District Centre.
Though officials claimed that work on six out of 10 toilet blocks has been completed, shopkeepers claimed that there was no proper facility in the market. “Most of the toilets are partially renovated/reconstructed and remain closed all the time so it is impossible to use them. The overall progress on the project is really slow. As a result, the work that was done in the first phase has started losing its luster. The buildings are also not repaired properly,” said Inder Kohli, a member of the Nehru Place Traders Association (NPTA). The traders also said that till now the work of tanning on the land has not started.
The overall upgradation was initiated by the DDA in December 2019. The Skywalk only recently started taking shape.
An official said, “As far as the revival of the Nehru Place complex is concerned, the project includes improvement of building façade, drainage system, upgradation of public plaza, tensile structures and seating arrangements and construction of 10 new toilet blocks.” is included.”
Built in 1972 and spread over 94.4 acres, Nehru Place District Center has 89 buildings. About 30 years ago the complex was handed over to the then SDMC for maintenance. Seeing the dilapidated condition of the premises, the DDA started renovating it.
