Kochi: Nearly four years after its launch, the life mission on housing project Greater Cochin Development Authority‘S (gcda) The ground work is nearing completion in Mundamveli for the rehabilitation of the residents of P&T Colony. gcda Confirmed that more than 80% of the work has been completed and the inauguration will happen before May 31.

The High Court had earlier ordered rehabilitation of P&T Colony residents by April 26 and April 15 is the latest deadline set by the GCDA for the project; But it is likely to be missed. Sources said that there is a plan to inaugurate buildings under the Chief Minister’s 100-day program and the pace of works has been increased. Besides, the families are to be rehabilitated before the monsoon. A team headed by Executive Engineer is monitoring the work.

Chief Minister laid the foundation stone of the project Pinarayi Vijayan in July 2018 and promised to complete the project within a year. The work started only in 2020 and GCDA officials said that two waves of Covid, Ukraine war (which led to increase in steel prices) etc have delayed the project. Moreover, the fund crunch faced by the project contractor Thrissur District Labor Contract Cooperative Society (TDLCCS) also delayed the project, which had already missed several deadlines.

83 flats are being built in two four-storey buildings of 70 cents each. Each flat has an area of ​​375 sq ft with two bedrooms, a living-cum-dining room, kitchen and a toilet. In addition, each building will have common facilities like sick room, day care, admin room and reading room as well as rain water harvesting tank, drinking water tank and fire protection system.

The Pre-Engineered Building (PEB) structuring method is used for the project and the basic structure is of steel and the walls are made of Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) blocks. Deck sheet concrete is used for the floor.

The total cost of the project is Rs 14.61 crore, with each unit costing around Rs 16 lakh per unit. Whereas life mission Rs 9.03 crore allocated under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) scheme of the central government, an additional amount of Rs 1.23 crore is received. Around Rs 4.86 crore has been received under the funding of Cochin Smart Mission Limited.
