Jose Maria Miranda said that several thousands of unscheduled premises existed in Margao which, he said, were vote banks of politicians, and hence no efforts were being made to assess these premises. “However, on the other hand, the shops/houses/flats which are closed and are not generating any waste, are charged garbage collection charges,” he said.
The delegation argued that if all non-assessed premises were exploited for revenue, the municipality would be flooded with funds and no increase in taxes would be necessary.
Coutinho said, “Our demand will not cause any loss to the council, but several crores of rupees every year from unused sources of revenue.” “We urge the Speaker to act not only in the interest of the loyal taxpayers, but also in the interest of the council by further increasing its revenue collection.”
