Relax building norms for smaller plots in Kolkata: Mayor

Kolkata: Mayor firhad hakim asked on friday Kolkata Municipal Corporation The building department should provide relief to the owners of small plots by relaxing the building rules so that they can build houses on them.

“Why should owners of small plots be prevented from building houses because of a set of strict construction rules? Hakim said, we need to give some relaxation so that the owners of small plots can fulfill their dreams.

A KMC building department official said the civic body is already giving some relief to owners of small plots to facilitate construction of houses.

During the interactive session, Hakim also raised the issue of the officials of the Building Department not taking action against a section of unscrupulous promoters indulging in illegal constructions and depriving the rights of genuine flat owners.

Hakim was responding to a call made by a south Kolkata resident who alleged that he had not received the completion certificate for the building as the promoter had illegally constructed an additional floor.

Hakim directed the director general of the KMC building department to “identify the officials who are turning a blind eye to illegal constructions and take strict action.”
