Kolkata, Bidhannagar Police has interrogated the RWA New City To identify the flats given on rent. The police are planning to conduct surprise checks to verify whether the occupants of the flat are the same as mentioned in the verification documents submitted to the police.
The move was taken after the Bidhannagar police busted a racket of fake call center operators, who were operating from flats and houses in New Town and Salt Lake.
“We are requesting the RWA members under their jurisdiction to prepare a list of tenants of their respective housing societies in a specific format and send it to us. The exercise will help us create a new database of tenants living in the premises where we plan to conduct random physical verification, said a senior official of the Bidhannagar commissionerate.
The RWA members have been asked to mention the tenant’s tower and flat number, period of tenancy, whether the tenant regularly occupies the flat or keeps it vacant, nature of tenancy (student, family, job holder or PG). Approximate number of persons living in a flat, name and phone number of the broker/landlord and if any other points which the members of the society want to add.
Citizens should do this anyway, if nothing else, for their own safety. Many neighborhoods also have a large proportion of the elderly population and even the presence of unverified strangers puts them at risk.TimesView
In New Town and Salt Lake, where a large number of outsiders reside as tenants, it is ideal to submit details of all tenants residing in the jurisdiction of Bidhannagar Commissionerate. The practice has been going on for a long time, but when the police busted a fake call center racket earlier this month, they realized the potential loophole in the system.
Illicit money to the tune of Rs 4 crore was recovered from the flats and the police nabbed the fraudsters who were living as tenants and paying guests while working as executives of fake call centers from the flats. This revelation gave the police a new initiative to create a new database.
“At Bidhannagar police we ask landlords to submit details of tenants, including photocopies of identity cards along with their identity, job, place of work, previous residence and rent agreements. With the documents in hand, we do background verification of the tenants. Following the present revelation, we are preparing a fresh list of tenants and are planning to conduct surprise inspections at their homes to match the residents as well as the residents presented in the verification documents,” the official said. The residents have welcomed the move.
