Bring back tax exemption for self-occupied houses: Pune citizens

Pune: Various citizen groups have urged the state government and Pune Municipal Corporation ,PMC) Revamping the scheme of 40% exemption in property tax for self-occupied houses in civic areas.

A special exemption for self-occupied properties was introduced in 1970. But it was not notified as an act by any state government. Hence, the exemption was declared invalid by the auditors of the central government and scrapped in 2019. The PMC had started collecting additional tax as arrears after the exemption was removed. But the campaign was stopped after public protest.

“The civil administration and the state government have not given any clarity about their future course of action and hardworking taxpayers are suffering. The authorities should give this relaxation again,” said Vivek Velankar of the civic group Aware Citizen Manch.

Municipal officials said they have written to the state government seeking clarification on the issue. The decision to recover the old tax will be taken as per the instructions of the State Government. Sudhir Kulkarni of Nagri Hakka Samiti said that citizens are being punished for the mistakes of municipal officials.

“If the authorities want to go back on the tax exemption decision, they should have done so a few decades ago. Why are they increasing the burden on taxpayers by imposing additional retrospective tax? The PMC claims that orders were issued to prevent this. ” recovery. But the civic officials could not furnish the details of the order in the RTI reply. Citizens are facing the threat of heavy tax recovery,” Kulkarni said.
