Have you ever seen the movie in which a young, impressionable girl approaches an old creepy crone who reads her fortunes by shuffling a tarot deck? Krone picks up a card and looks at it ominously and then drops it on the table. The card reads death and the horrified girl, horrified and shocked by the cruel fate, steps back and begins to cry in fear of her impending doom. Maybe she leaves the room in a frenzy?

These clichés and superstitions still live in people’s minds when it comes to Tarot and some even call it the work of the devil. But is something more on the cards or is it just some new age mumbo-jumbo?

Once you look at a particular card, it activates your subconscious mind. Your unconscious is a storehouse of deep awareness and memory that remains inaccessible to us in the waking state, yet deeply influences every thought, thought, and action that arises from your landscape of being.

The unconscious is fertile with divine forms and creative expressions that reveal a universality that pervades the collective hive mind of humanity. However, at this level of our knowledge, not much is known about the unconscious. We are actually the unconscious of the unconscious. The thing is, we can’t even begin to fathom the depth of our ignorance, because there are things we know and things we don’t know. The percentage of things about which we have no knowledge and about which we have no concept is very high. But there are tools for navigating through the unknown regions of the unconscious mind and the Tarot is one such tool. Today we will look at five such Tarot cards and try to understand what they reveal, and no death means literal death when this card appears in a sense.

The Death card symbolizes a purely transformative process. The universe is giving you a chance to turn the perpetual cyclic movements of life around and look deep within for meaning. What is ending must end, and we cannot force it to go on for long. We cannot keep our views on a particular situation just because it feeds us a false sense of security. We must be completely objective and unbiased when we analyze our lives. Death is Vairagya and so we must be if we are to end one cycle and move on to another. In contrast to the Death card, we have the fertile and creative empress who is an iconic depiction of Venus/Aphrodite. She has grace, she has beauty and she is the very embodiment of the mother archetype. She is the sensual, procreative, nurturing, protecting, comforting divine feminine in various roles; She is the universal mother incarnate. She has full breasts which shows that she is abundant and pregnant. There is no dullness or dullness in her energy and she blesses us with love, beauty and desire.
