ChandigarhAction is being taken against : commercial property tax defaulters, Chandigarh Municipal Corporation On Monday, three commercial properties in Sector 47 were sealed. Action has been taken against those who have not deposited tax despite repeated sealing notices.
Sources said that these commercial properties had to pay property tax ranging between Rs 50,000 and Rs 80,000. With the parties concerned ignoring repeated messages, the MC was left with no option but to seal the buildings after completing the legal exercise on Monday.
“Though the amount was not huge, the defaulters were not taking it seriously and did not pay despite several opportunities. This left the authority with no option but to seal all the four commercial properties in the area,” said sources.
Since property tax from commercial properties accounts for a considerable portion of property tax, the authority is focusing on recovery on this front. “Though recovery notices are being sent to tax defaulters of residential properties as well, sealing notices are being sent to commercial properties as the authority cannot seal houses. Besides, commercial properties account for the maximum amount,” said sources.
The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has set a target of Rs 80 crore revenue from property tax in the current financial year (2022-2023) beginning April 1. This amount includes outstanding dues with various departments and authorities.
