Noida: In the cold morning of Sunday, hundreds of home buyers demonstrated at Murti Chowk demanding handing over of flats and registry.

The protesters said they would continue to demonstrate every week until their demands were met and threatened a “massive agitation” in the coming days.

Kumar said they would no longer just buy assurances. He further said, “The government cannot ignore the problems of home buyers like this. They should immediately start the registry of flats. Those who have not got flats for more than 12 years should be given ownership by now.” “

For years, there has been a standoff over what interest builders should pay to development authorities for delay in clearing land dues.

This has stalled the registries of thousands of flats, with officials insisting that developers make payments first. Developers’ body CREDAI has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court regarding the interest rate.

The hearing is to be held on January 19.

Buyers said their relentless campaigning, both on the streets and online, prompted Noida MP Mahesh Sharma to raise the issue of delayed registries and handing over of flats in the Lok Sabha.

Mihir Gautam, a protester, said a flat without a registry is a serious threat to buyers. “The most important problem is that the homebuyer is not the legal owner. Financial institutions charge high interest on home loans. Also, private banks do not offer any home improvement loans. Flats cannot even be sold as they will not get a fair price.” For example, a 1BHK registered flat costs more than a 2BHK unregistered flat.”
