Vadodara: The Sanjaynagar Housing Scheme For the urban poor under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is now believed to be the largest of its kind in the country. On Monday, after a long delay, work on the plan officially started.
Mayor Keyur Rokadiya Claimed after work started. He said that 2944 houses would be constructed for the urban poor at the site. “This will be the biggest under PMAY,” he said.
Rokadia said the total number of houses being built under PMAY at different sites in big cities was more than Vadodara, but the authorities were not aware of such a large number of houses being constructed on a single site.
Rokadia said the initial contract was for construction of 1,841 houses for residents of Sanjaynagar and 796 additional houses by the realty to the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) as a premium. “However, we negotiated further and persuaded the developers to build 307 more houses on the site as a premium,” Rokadia said.
The VMC had demolished 1,841 houses in May 2017 for the housing scheme proposed as a public-private partnership under PMAY in Sanjaynagar. Work on the project could not start as it was learned that some plots were also owned by private parties and government departments.
