Kolkata: Only one contractor has participated in the tender called for reconstruction bow market On August 31, 2019, houses collapsed following the East-West Metro tunneling incident. Residents fear that the lukewarm response to the bids may delay the reconstruction of their houses.

KMRCThe implementing agency of the 16 km east-west metro, is reluctant to disclose the name of the company. “We will finalize the contract with the company after going through a two-stage evaluation (technical feasibility and cost),” said an official. Sources said if the sole bidder fails to meet the criteria, tenders will have to be invited again.

But the KMRC is reportedly not ready to see it as a setback. A senior official said, “An applicant is enough to go ahead with the work in open bidding.” Affected residents living in rented houses were suspicious.

Sudipta Seal, whose house is Durga Pituri Lanecollapsed on September 1, 2019, said, “I don’t think with such a bad reaction the reconstruction of our houses can begin in February 2023.” More than 80 affected families have been kept in rented houses.

A KMRC official told TOI in October that they want to start work by February 2023 so that the first set of families can move in by 2025. To meet the timeline, a developer is to be selected soon. It was difficult, officials said. Tenders for “Reconstruction of buildings in Bowbazar” were issued on 29 October for the reconstruction of 23 houses on Durga Pituri Lane and Sakarpara Lane. The builder has to construct the houses for Rs 19.8 crore in 2 years.
