MumbaiResident of : BDD Chawl Now instead of opting for transit tenements one can avail monthly rent of Rs 25,000.
Anil Diggikar, MHADA The chief executive officer and vice-chairman said that the state government has approved a proposal that will allow rent paying tenants, who are to be shifted for redevelopment of chawls.
“The scheme is for those who have to be shifted out and who do not want temporary houses. MHADA will pay them the rent,” he said. For the first phase of redevelopment, around 4,384 families need to be shifted from Worli, Naigaon and NM Joshi Marg to BDD chawls. Officials said the tenements available are around 3,104.
Kiran Mane, member of All BDD Chawl Bhadekaru Haq Sanrakshan Samiti, said that in the first phase, residents of chawls going for redevelopment are being provided transit tenements in mill buildings owned by MHADA.
“Suddenly, we came to know that houses are being offered to the affected people from Nhava Sheva port. Our organization strongly opposed this as it would affect the redevelopment of Worli BDD Chawl. We are happy that MHADA will now offer fares which we have been pushing for since the beginning.
The BDD Chawl redevelopment project has become a prestige issue for the state government. While the Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP-Shiv Sena government pushed for redevelopment, it was the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government that got it off the ground.
A large number of Marathi-speaking people are tenants of these centuries-old chawls, whose redevelopment will have a significant impact on turnout for the BMC and assembly elections.
