The high court had also ordered the government and authorities concerned to complete infrastructure development such as roads, drainage and electricity and drinking water supply in the Amaravati capital city and region within a month.

The SC bench said it needed to examine the issue in detail and posted a batch of petitions filed by the state, farmers’ unions and their committees for further hearing on January 31.

The top court, which had asked the parties to file their response by December, was informed by senior advocate KK Venugopal that the state government has repealed the law for three different state capitals.

The High Court had said on March 3 that the state government’s inaction and capital of Andhra Pradesh Regional Development Authority (APRDA‘s) Failure to develop the capital city and capital region as agreed in terms of the Development Agreement-cum-Irrevocable General Power of Attorney, is nothing but a deviation from the promise made by the State, defeating the legitimate expectation .

It had said that the fundamental rights of the petitioners (farmers) have been violated by the state and the APCRDA, as they have given up their only source of livelihood—more than 33,000 acres of fertile land.

The High Court had delivered its 300-page judgment on a batch of 63 writ petitions filed by aggrieved farmers of the Amravati region.
