Trichy: Chief Minister MK Stalin Inaugurated Samathuvapuram, a Periyar memorial with renovated houses and repaired infrastructure Periya Kattukulam near musiri via video conferencing from Chennai on Wednesday.
The memorial consisting of 100 houses was dedicated to the selected beneficiaries from the village Kattukulam Village Panchayat. Trichy Collector M Pradeep Kumar, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Project Director S Devanathan and MLAs attended the function in Trichy today.
DRDA allots the residences as per the reservation rules. The Trichy district administration gave 40 houses to Scheduled Caste (SC) people, 25 houses each to Most Backward Class (MBC) and Backward Class (BC) people and 10 to others.
Samathuvapuram in Periya Kattukulam was supposed to become functional in 2010, but the project was stalled despite construction of houses and infrastructure due to legal issues associated with its establishment. It has facilities like roads, playground, park, ration shop and overhead water tank.
With the legal issues settled, the government allocated 112.81 lakhs for the renovation of the entire Samathuvapuram. Set up on 9.47 acres at Periya Kattukulam, it will be the eighth of its kind in Trichy.
The district already has seven Samathuvapurams at Inamkulathur, Kallakudi, Pannampatti, Ezurpatti, Thalambadi, Arachi and Cannanore. Project director Devanathan said all houses in other Samathuvapuram in the district are working.
