Delhi civic body bars 140 architects for three years for approving wrong building plans

New Delhi: Delhi Municipal Corporation Officials said 140 architects have been barred from approving plans for buildings and said details of 20% of plans would be probed following complaints that its listed architects had approved plans with incorrect information.

The MCD has around 1,300 listed architects.

“Our senior officers are randomly verifying building plans/documents to ensure that the ownership is correct and the documents do not pertain to plots in unauthorized colonies. The department has so far registered 140 have banned the architects for three years and canceled their sanctioned plans for furnishing incorrect information or other reasons,” said an official.

“The move has been taken in the wake of increasing complaints about architects violating building norms while approving/submitting building plans. Also, MCD does not approve building plans in unauthorized colonies. Repeated violations For those who do, we are looking at options to get a police complaint registered,” the official said.

Under the MCD, permits for construction of residential buildings up to 500 sqm do not require physical verification from the corporation apart from approval from a registered or enlisted architect.

An online portal for such transactions was launched a few years ago as a measure to improve “ease of doing business”.

Officials claimed that the MCD was not responsible for checking the quality of construction material of individual houses. “But we conduct a survey of dangerous buildings before monsoon and our staff verify the condition of buildings from outside, submit reports and issue notices,” the official said.

To identify the latitude and longitude of planned properties and check the land use, the MCD has recently launched an app that will help in geo-tagging properties.

“Geo-tagging of properties by taxpayers will provide location-wise identification of individual properties. It will also help in verifying land use as per permissible planning. Specifying a unique latitude and longitude for a property on the GIS map in the application will also “By selecting the current location,” said an MCD official.
