Housing and Urban Development Minister S Muthusamy has been talking about efforts to sell the unsold houses and rent out the rest. Recently, Director General of Police C Silendra Babu and TNPHCL chairman AK Viswanathan visited the Sholinganallur site where not more than 1,000 units were unsold. “We wanted to buy homes in bulk under HIG, MIG and LIG schemes, but at a 20% discount,” said Viswanathan.

The issue was raised in the recent TNHB meeting where it was decided to give it at a concessional price. “These houses will be beneficial for policemen working in Greater Chennai Police Commissionerate, Avadi, Tambaram, Avadi, Kancheepuram and Chengalpet. They can get their own house at a lower rate,” he added.

An awareness camp was organized for the police personnel at the project sites in the presence of TNHB officials and Public Sector Bank officials.

TNHB chairman Poochi Murugan said the decision to give houses to the police personnel was taken in consultation with Chief Minister MK Stalin and the Housing Minister. “These houses provided at subsidized rates will be of immense help to the police who work day and night to protect the people. The Sholinganallur project has houses ranging from 700 sq ft in the LIG category to above 1,100 sq ft in the HIG category In Athipattu, the range of houses is between 400 sq ft to 600 sq ft.”

A police constable working in Chennai said that this is a welcome move. “I would prefer a house in Sholinganallur as it is close to the city and will even have metro rail connectivity soon.”
