yavatmal: A delegation led by former councilors Usha Diwate And Pallavi Ramtke Criticizing the property tax system, a memorandum of demands was recently submitted to District Guardian Minister Sanjay Rathod. Yavatmal Municipal Council (MC).
The civic body charges 1% tax at the time of registering the sale deed. Now, the MC demands an additional one per cent tax if the owner wants to register the property with the MC, else the civic body refuses to issue any certificate, the delegation pointed out.
The needy people have to deal with touts at the MC office to expedite the issuance of certificates, the delegation said, adding that the civic body is also charging 2% penalty every month for delay in tax payment.
According to citizens, the municipal corporation has failed to provide proper civic amenities like garbage removal, parking lots, good roads and drainage network. On the other hand, administrator Dadarao Dolharkar is spending money on unproductive works, he said.
Agriculture activist Ashok Bhutra told TOI that Rathore has assured to look into the matter. Bhutra demanded the abolition of the tax system.
Diwate said the tax system would be reviewed after the elected body comes to power.
Sikander Shah, a resident, told TOI that the then MC chief Subhash Rai had waived off the fine on paying the outstanding tax in one go. Shiv Sena’s (Uddhav group) liaison chief Santosh Dhawale said, “Such exemptions should be there to improve tax revenue” and warned that a mass movement would be launched against “excessive tax collection”.
TOI has received several complaints against illegal tax collection. District Collector Amol Yedge said that he has also received some complaints. According to the Collector, there is a provision for tax exemption in the Municipal Act. He said that the Administrator of the Municipal Corporation would be directed to send a proposal in this regard keeping in mind the concern of the public. I will send the proposal to the Urban Development Department for approval,” said Yedge.
