Goa to implement affordable central housing schemes

Panaji: The cabinet on Monday approved the amendment Goa (Regulation of Land Development and Building Construction) Act, 2008 to implement government policies including land development for inclusive and affordable housing for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).

With this amendment, the state government can start the Central Housing Scheme for EWS.

Land development and building construction in the State is governed by the provisions of the Goa Land Development and Building Construction Regulations, 2010 as amended from time to time, and to the effect of the provisions of the Goa (Regulation of Land Development and Building Construction) Act, 2008.

The cabinet note states that provisions in the rules allow relaxations such as minimum plot size, maximum coverage while developing housing for EWS.

“However, it does not address exemptions for categories like low income groups, middle income groups etc. Various schemes have been launched by the center like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Affordable Housing Schemes and other Inclusive Housing Schemes. Regulations regarding minimum plot size, setbacks etc need to be relaxed or modified for their successful implementation,” read the cabinet note.

A senior official said that Section 8 of the Act states that from the date of coming into force of the rules made under Section 7, any land development and building construction in the state shall be in accordance with the provisions of such rules.
