Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) faces the daunting task of evicting 1,000 people dilapidated wada before the onset of monsoon.
NMC officials said they have so far managed to evict occupants from a dozen wadas. But in most of the cases, the occupants are reluctant to leave the wada as they do not have any alternative living arrangements.
“Besides, there are disputes between the wada owners and the tenants. They are not ready to vacate the wada as they have been living there for many years,” said officials.
The town planning department of NMC has directed the divisional officers of all the six divisions to take necessary action against the occupants of the wadas who are not vacating them.
A senior official of the town planning department said, “We have asked the departmental officers to take action at their level like cutting water and electricity connections of the dilapidated wada.”
Divisional Officer, Nashik West, Nitin Ner said that they have already given notices to the owners of all Dilapidated Wadas in Nashik The West Division asked them to vacate the Wada, but to no avail.
“Now, we have started the process of disconnecting the water and electricity connections of the wada,” Ner said.
“We wrote to Maharashtra The State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) will disconnect the power connections of dilapidated Wadas in the division. Besides, the water supply department has been instructed to disconnect the water connections of unsafe wadas,” said Ner.
Dnyaneshwar Aher, an official with the water supply department in Nashik West division, said he has sought police protection for his proposed drive to disconnect water connections.
According to the latest NMC survey, there are 1,192 wadas in the city which are in a dilapidated condition.
During rains, these wadas become dangerous as there have been cases in the past where the structures collapsed and the occupants suffered injuries.
Last year, during the monsoon, more than 15 wadas in the city partially collapsed.
